In 1944 the Free French forces, including the 1st Battalion Marine Rifle Commandos (1er Bataillon de Fusiliers Marine Commandos), participated in the Normandy landings during Operation Overlord. This unit, led by Commandant Philippe Kieffer, was the only French contingent to fight on land on D-Day. They landed on Sword Beach as part of British No. 4 Commando, tasked with capturing German defences.
