- First published in 1969, this book is based on a series of articles written by Tony Harmsworth for the Basingstoke Canal Society’s newsletter when it was still in its infancy. His grandfather, Alexander J Harmsworth, built and repaired hundreds of boats at Ash Vale and the canal’s survival into the 20th Century is largely credited to him. AJ Harmsworth bought the canal in 1923 and ran it as a successful commercial venture until his death in 1947. This publication tells of his boat-building business and describes the boats that operated on the canal during its commercial days. The book has been updated twice to include additional information about the boats involved in the canal’s restoration and those currently in service. Roger Cansdale revised the latest edition in 2015. A5, 36 pages, colour and black & white photos. Price includes P&P.
