Polar bears are excellent swimmers with huge paws that are covered by small bumps called papillae which help to grip the ice. The body of a polar bear is ideally suited to the seasonal shifts in the Arctic. Their fur covers a thick layer of fat, their ears and tails are small to limit heat loss, and their paws allow them to tread on thin ice. A polar bear’s skin is black and its fur is transparent with a hollow core that reflects and refracts light from the sun and off the snow.
